Eating Out in Alaska

Anchorage: Snow City Cafe, 1034 W. 4th Avenue, Phone (907) 272-2489.  I can't remember what Denny had but I had the western omelet made with reindeer sausage and it was quite good.  Very expensive but you're in Alaska and there was a good amount of food. (08/2010)

Dalton Highway:  MM 412 Deadhorse Camp; buffet only and you eat with the oil field workers.  They eat well because what else is there to do at the end of the road? (08/2010)

MM 174.8  Coldfood Camp, buffet for tour bus riders, assuming same for travelers passing through.  Not as good as at the oil field. $$$ (08/2010)

MM 60.3  Hot Spot Cafe, home of the $9.50 hamburger.  No sides, no toppings on this baby but it's big enough to share.  You can buy sides ala carte, we just grabbed a couple of candy bars for later on the bus ride. (08/2010)

Denali:  Denali Princess Lodge, Mile 238 George Parks Hwy, Phone (907) 683-2282  The King Salmon Restaurant is well appointed, the staff is friendly, quick and polite and the food is very good.  We also heard good things about the Music Dinner Theater and wish we had gone there also.  There is another restaurant called the Base Camp Bistro that also looked good to us but we ran out of time.  (8/2010)

Fairbanks:  Fairbanks Princess Lodge, 4477 Pikes Landing Road, Phone (907) 445-4477  We ate at both the Trackers Restaurant which has more of a pub/log cabin feel and at the Edgewater Dining Room, a much more elegant setting overlooking the Chena River.  Both have good food, both are very expensive, but we enjoyed our meals here very much. (8/2010)

Skagway:  Skagway Brewing Company, 7th and Broadway, Phone (907) 983-2739  We were told that the locals favor Spruce Tip draft beer and that this was the place to find it.  Apparently the locals like it so much they drank it all up, so we had soup and sandwiches instead with iced tea.  Try the green bean soup if they have it.  It's great on a cold day.  The pulled pork sandwich and burgers are good here also.  Pricey--it's a tourist town and it's Alaska. (9/2010)

The rest of our meals were aboard the Island Princess cruise ship and one on the train that carried us from Denali to Whittier.
